There is a spot in the Giant Eagle on Murray Avenue where I have stood holding two bags of shredded mozzarella for longer than I want to admit. One bag was $3.49. The other was $4.99. The cheaper bag was eight ounces and the expensive one was a pound, which I knew, and which did not help me at all, because the shelf tag under the first said $0.44/oz and the tag under the second said $4.99/lb.
Same shelf. Same cheese. Two different units.
I did the math on my phone like a person who has never bought cheese before, and the pound bag won by about twelve cents an ounce. Then I bought it, drove home, and started thinking about how many times I had not done the math.
Pennsylvania has required this since 1979
The Unit Price Disclosure Act, Act 1979-271, is why those small numbers are on the tag at all. It was a genuinely good piece of consumer law. Before it, comparing a 12-ounce box to an 18-ounce box meant doing arithmetic in an aisle, and most people, reasonably, did not.
The problem is that the law is older than the barcode scanner in most Pennsylvania stores. There is an active co-sponsorship memo in Harrisburg pointing out that it never anticipated digital shelf labels, online ordering, or the specific modern art form of quietly reducing a package from 16 ounces to 14 and leaving the price alone.
It also does not force a store to use the same unit across a category. That is the gap I keep falling into. A store can price one cheese by the ounce and the one beside it by the pound and be entirely within the rules.
How bad is it, actually? I went and counted.
This is the sort of thing you can have a feeling about or you can go and look, and one of the small consolations of building a price database is that I can go and look.
So I pulled every butter product we hold a price for and asked a stupidly simple question: how many different units of measurement is butter sold in?
The answer is eleven.

Some of that is legitimate. Butter and ghee and spreadable tubs are genuinely different products and a tub really is measured by volume. But a good chunk of it is just noise: the same physical stick of butter, described one way by one store and another way by another, and there is no aisle in America where you can see all eleven at once and know what you are looking at.
The reason this matters is not that eleven is a big number. It is that the conversion has to happen somewhere. Either the store does it for you, or software does it, or you do it standing in front of the case with a phone in one hand and a bag of cheese in the other.
Four places the unit price quietly stops helping
1. Two units on one shelf
The mozzarella problem. It shows up worst in cheese, deli meat, and coffee, where some items are sold by weight and some by package. If you only glance at the big number you will compare 0.44 to 4.99 and conclude nothing.
There is a version of this that is even easier to miss: per 100 grams versus per ounce, which turns up on imported items and on a lot of the Aldi specials. A hundred grams is about 3.5 ounces, so the per-100g number always looks roughly three and a half times worse than it is. If you have ever picked up an imported cheese, recoiled at the tag, and put it back, there is a reasonable chance you were reacting to arithmetic rather than to the price.
2. Drained weight is not net weight
A 15-ounce can of chickpeas is not fifteen ounces of chickpeas. A good chunk of that is aquafaba, which is lovely in a meringue and useless in hummus. Canned tuna, olives, artichoke hearts, mandarin oranges, roasted red peppers: the unit price on the tag is calculated off net weight, because that is what the law says to do, and the thing you are actually buying is the drained weight.
Two brands in the same size can have meaningfully different drained weights. It is printed on the label in small type, usually right under the net weight. Nobody reads it. I read it now, mostly out of spite.
The category where this costs real money is canned tuna, because the gap between brands is unusually wide and because tuna is expensive enough per ounce for a few ounces to matter. If you buy a lot of it, that is the one worth checking once and then never thinking about again.
3. Concentrate versus ready to drink
Broth, juice, iced tea, laundry detergent, dish soap. A concentrate priced per fluid ounce will look expensive next to the ready-to-pour version and cost less than half as much once you add the water. The tag is not wrong. It just is not answering the question you have.
Detergent is the worst offender because the industry has spent two decades making concentration a marketing variable. "2X ultra" and "4X" and pods all price out differently per fluid ounce and the only number that means anything is cost per load, which is on the bottle and never on the shelf tag.
4. When the count is not the thing you want
Paper towels are the famous one. A "mega roll" is a unit of marketing, not measurement, and the only number worth reading on that package is square feet. Same with tortillas, where a ten-count of the street-taco size and a ten-count of the burrito size are both "10 ct" and are not remotely the same purchase.
Eggs are the sympathetic case here. Per dozen is genuinely the number you want, because you use eggs by the egg and not by the ounce. Not every count-based price is a trick, and a system that mechanically converted eggs to a price per ounce would be consistent and useless.
The habit, which took about a month to stick
I stopped trying to do arithmetic in the aisle. Doing arithmetic while somebody waits behind you with a cart is a losing game, and I would guess a third of my worst grocery decisions were made under exactly that kind of low-grade social pressure.
What replaced it was smaller. I picked one unit per category and learned roughly two numbers for each.
- Butter, per pound. I know what a fine price looks like and what a stock-up price looks like.
- Coffee, per ounce, always, because bag sizes in coffee are complete anarchy.
- Milk, per gallon, and mostly I just check whether the half gallon costs more than half the gallon, which it usually does.
- Ground beef, per pound, at the fat ratio I actually buy. 80/20 and 93/7 are different products at different prices and it is not useful to compare them.
- Paper goods, per hundred square feet. This one needed a calculator exactly twice and then I had it.
Two numbers per category, a good price and a stock-up price. That is the whole system, and it means most trips involve no math at all, because I am not comparing packages anymore. I am comparing a package to a number I already carry around.
The part that surprised me is how quickly the numbers stop being something you recall and start being something you feel. After a couple of months I did not think "butter should be around such-and-such." I just got a small wrong-feeling when it was not, the way you do when a familiar road has been resurfaced.

What to do when the store makes it genuinely hard
A few specific moves that have earned their place.
When the units differ, convert the small one up rather than the big one down. Multiplying by 16 is easier to do in your head than dividing by it, and you are less likely to lose a decimal place. Forty-four cents an ounce is seven dollars a pound. That comparison takes two seconds; $4.99 per pound versus $0.44 per ounce takes considerably longer and invites a mistake.
Distrust the biggest package by default in exactly one situation: when the item has recently changed size. A size cut does not always preserve the ordering. Occasionally the mid-size package quietly becomes the better buy and stays that way for months, and nothing on the shelf will tell you.
Ignore the multi-buy framing until you have the per-unit number. "2 for $5" is $2.50 each, which is either good or bad, and the framing is doing work to stop you from finding out which. Sometimes the single price is $2.49 and the promotion is a rounding error dressed as an event.
Learn the sizes your household actually finishes. The cheapest per ounce is not cheap if a third of it goes in the bin. This is the one piece of advice in this post that is more about your kitchen than about arithmetic, and it is probably the one that has saved me the most.
The part where I admit the obvious
I built the comparison tool on this site because I could not make the habit work for a full cart. Two numbers per category is fine for the ten things I buy every week. It falls apart at forty items, and it falls apart completely the moment I am buying something I do not buy often, which is exactly when I am most likely to overpay.
So the honest version is that the habit covers the staples and software covers the rest. Most of the work in the software is not the comparing either. It is the unit conversion, taking "2 x 12 oz," "14.5 oz," "1 lb 2 oz," and "per pound" and getting all of it onto one scale before anything is compared at all. That layer is where a price comparison is either trustworthy or decorative, and eleven units of butter is the reason it takes as much work as it does.
If you only take one thing
Read the unit on the shelf tag before you read the number on it. That is it. The number is the part that grabs you and the unit is the part that decides whether the number means anything, and they are printed in roughly the same size for reasons I assume are boring rather than sinister.
The mozzarella, for what it is worth, was fine. I have bought the pound bag every time since.
